When Support Becomes Destiny

Working at New Destiny Family Success Center places me at the crossroads of the community, where women and families of many ages arrive with urgent questions and deeply personal challenges. I was completing an application for another mother at the front desk when Ms. MT walked in shortly after learning she was pregnant. She looked uncertain and overwhelmed, unsure of what kind of help might exist for her. I explained that our agency supports pregnant mothers through the program Healthy Women and Healthy Families with education on nutrition, prenatal care, safety, and emotional well-being, while connecting women to essential community resources, and that I could guide her step by step. Before she left, she enrolled in the program and opened the door to what would become months of trust and support.

Throughout the following months, I stayed connected with her through virtual, phone, and in-person conversations focused on building knowledge and stability. Drawing from my role as a doula and community health worker, I shared exercises, comforting positions for labor, breastfeeding techniques, and guidance about breastfeeding and child development. She shared that a previous miscarriage had made her fearful of medical settings and unsure of her right to ask questions. I encouraged her to advocate for herself with her doctor and reminded her that her health and her baby’s well-being mattered enough to seek clear answers. Little by little, the information and reassurance helped ease her anxiety and allowed her to approach her prenatal care with greater confidence. As her knowledge grew, so did her sense of purpose within the community. After attending seminars and workshops, Ms. MT began sharing what she learned with other pregnant women she met in supermarkets, clinics, and neighborhood groups.

She practiced speaking up with healthcare providers and sought clarity about benefits and income changes that affected her family’s stability. The most inspiring stage came when she asked how I became a doula and expressed a desire to follow the same path. I connected her with the training application; she was accepted, and she is now preparing to begin a career dedicated to maternal health this spring.

I am truly grateful to work at New Destiny, where I have the opportunity to witness transformations like hers. Watching this young woman grow from confusion, to having a voice, to building a meaningful career, would not be possible without the support the agency provides. My focus this month is on Ms. MT, because in the springtime, she will become a doula, a goal that reflects everything New Destiny hopes to do. From coming in lost to standing empowered, to preparing for a profession dedicated to helping mothers, her journey shows how New Destiny FSC empowers women and helps them believe in their own strength and future.
