Empowering Families Through Digital Literacy

In October, we were honored to have Carolin L, the Vice President of our Parent Advisory Committee (PAC), lead a series of Computer and Smartphone Basics classes. This life skill workshop had not been offered in a while, and it was a tremendous success, thanks to Carolin’s dedication, passion, and expertise. Carolin, a full-time mother of two children, a teenager and a two-year-old, was not only instrumental in organizing the classes but also created all the materials and content to provide for participants. Despite her busy schedule, Carolin’s commitment to empowering others was evident in every class she taught. Her classes were engaging, informative, and tailored to meet the needs of the diverse group of participants. The program catered to both English and Spanish-speaking families, with Carolin, who is a Spanish speaker, leading the sessions, and staff members translating to ensure everyone felt included. Even with the language barrier, Carolin’s warmth, patience, and enthusiasm made her teaching style effective, and the feedback from participants was overwhelmingly positive. The highest attendance was 17 participants, and 13 was the least attended day. Ms. Carolin hosted the class once a week for 2 hours in the month of October. Participants were not only learning new skills but were inspired by Carolin’s example of resilience and community spirit. A considerable number that completed the workshops requested more classes, eager to continue learning. Carolin’s ability to balance her full-time role as a mother, and her responsibilities as a leader in the PAC are a testament to her parental resilience. She models the importance of self-growth and determination, showing that even with a busy family life, it is possible to give back to the community. Her knowledge of parenting and child development, combined with her commitment to improving her own skills, helped make the classes more relatable to the participants, many of whom were parents themselves.

In our most recent PAC meeting, held just two days after the classes’ graduation, we took a moment to recognize Carolin’s outstanding contributions. Although not all PAC members participated in the classes, those who did were inspired by Carolin’s dedication, and the entire group expressed their appreciation for the program’s success. The social connections and sense of community Carolin fostered through these classes were powerful. The success of the program showed how concrete support in times of need in this case, access to free educational resources can empower families and create lasting change. At New Destiny, we are deeply grateful for Carolin’s leadership and the way she has enriched our community. Her passion for teaching and her unwavering commitment to supporting others exemplifies the spirit of collaboration and empowerment that defines our PAC.
