Many people are unaware of the many issues the industry faces. Even the best antivirus software can be a challenge. While some are minor and can be addressed easily, others are more serious.
One of the major issues is that antivirus signature protection does not cover a wide range of threats. It takes antivirus companies a long time to release updates to their anti-virus software when new viruses are discovered. They have to wait until the virus is identified by their products before sending it to be analysed.
In the meantime the virus is likely to spread and it’s highly likely that dozens or even hundreds of computers will be affected by the virus. It may also be spread to other networks. Anti-virus software needs to be able to detect and block these infections. This means that behaviour-blocking or heuristic analysis tools are more effective than signature detection.
Another issue is that incompatibility between different antivirus programs is quite frequent. While the majority antivirus software makers place a lot of emphasis on developing quality products and pay great attention to removing bugs, the truth is that sometimes multiple antivirus programs can lead to conflicts.
